Portsmouth Aquarist Society

Portsmouth Aquarist Society, founded over 50 years ago, is still one of the longest running, local fish societies. Luckily, thanks to the long serving members, P.A.S. still carries on - even though all the other local fish clubs, closed down through lack of support.

We are delighted that we have a constant, regular membership attending our twice-monthly meetings. It is good to know that they are always willing to turn out on more public occasions. Southsea Show for example, is the busiest. We try to attend other local shows in the area, and we always enjoy the visits we make to other fish clubs and societies.

During our meetings, we have a structured item, either a talk, film / DVD or slide show. We hold regular table shows during the years where we bring our fish to be judged. Since we all have other hobbies and interests, which are many and varied, we don't always keep to the topic of fish keeping. This year we've had a visit from a local bat society, where we were introduced to two species of native bats. Another evening we had a really interesting talk and demonstration on orchids. A member and his lovely assistant gave us two unusual and enthralling subjects. The first night, we learnt about reptile keeping and later, an evening on "setting up a marine tank for less than £200" One speakers' subject was so interesting, we simply ran out of time.....

In addition, we do get out and about as well. This summer we have had some trips to places of local interest. We have a weekend at Hayling Island to look forward to, and we enjoyed a weekend at the Isle of Wight. Who said that keeping fish is boring?

If you keep fish, or have kept fish, or are interested in keeping fish or any other type of aquatic pet.... Be it newts, axolotls, frogs, or terrapins, why not come along and see us. We enjoy meeting new people, having new members and we enjoy our hobby.

Interested? Come along at 8pm on the first and third Wednesday evenings at Buckland Community Centre.
